With the recent elimination of the straight-party ticket voting option in the State of Michigan, I am anticipating longer lines at the polls for the upcoming State General Election on November 8, 2016. Therefore, I recommend that you prepare for the upcoming elections by doing the following:

  • Please make sure you are registered to vote.  Click here to see if you are registered to vote. You may also use this link to view your sample ballot for the upcoming elections and track your absent voter ballot application. The deadline to register to vote in the State Primary Election is July 5, 2016 and the deadline to register to vote in the State General Election is October 11, 2016.
  • Make sure of your correct polling location before heading out to vote. If you are unsure, please feel free to call my office at (517) 676-7255 and we would be happy to assist you.
  • Check to see if you qualify for an absent voter ballot. Please click here for an absent voter ballot application for both the August 2nd Primary and November 8th General Elections.
  • If you forget to bring a valid photo ID with you to the polls, you may still cast your ballot by simply signing an affidavit.
Please feel free to contact me if I may be of additional assistance.

Sincerely,
Barb Byrum
Ingham County Clerk

What We Do

The County Clerk is elected for a four-year term and is responsible for keeping records of births, deaths, assumed names, co-partnerships, and issuing and filing marriage licenses.  In addition, the Clerk's office processes gun permits and notary bonds.  The Clerk also serves as the Clerk of the Board of Commissioners, the Board of Canvassers, the Gun Board, and is the Clerk of the Circuit Court.  The Clerk is also a member of the Plat Board and Election Commission. The Clerk also serves as an officiant for wedding ceremonies.

One of the more prominent responsibilities is the Chief Election Official in the County.  As such, the County Clerk administers all election functions required by law.  Part of those duties include the supervision of all national, state, and local elections and includes the training of all election workers in the County for those communities with a population of under ten thousand.  The Clerk is also responsible for the Administration of the Michigan Campaign Finance Reporting Act for those candidates that file for office at the local level.

Did you know the County Clerk maintains two offices?

The main office is located at the County Courthouse in downtown Mason and our branch office is located in Lansing at the Veterans Memorial Courthouse 313 W. Kalamazoo, on the corner of Kalamazoo and Walnut. Our hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. At our Mason location, there is free on street parking around the building. In Lansing there is free parking across from the Courthouse and metered parking on the street. At either location our staff will be happy to assist you with vital records, filing assumed names, co-partnerships, and issuing and filing marriage licenses.  In addition, we process concealed weapons applications and notary bonds. Concealed Weapons applications are taking about up to 10 weeks for approval. Our office is dedicated to offering prompt and efficient service to get you in and out of the door quickly and courteously.  Still have questions? Feel free to give us a call at (517) 676-7201.

My staff and I are dedicated to providing quality services to the citizens of Ingham County.  If I may be of assistance to you, please feel free to contact me.
