What We Do

The County Clerk is elected for a four-year term and is responsible for keeping records of births, deaths, assumed names, co-partnerships, and issuing and filing marriage licenses.  In addition, the Clerk's office processes gun permits and notary bonds.  The Clerk also serves as the Clerk of the Board of Commissioners, the Board of Canvassers, the Gun Board, and is the Clerk of the Circuit Court.  The Clerk is also a member of the Plat Board and Election Commission.

One of the more prominent responsibilities is the chief Election Official in the County.  As such, the County Clerk administers all election functions required by law.  Part of those duties include the supervision of all national, state, and local elections and includes the training of all election workers in the County for those communities with a population of under ten thousand.  The Clerk is also responsible for the Administration of the Michigan Campaign Finance Reporting Act for those candidates that file for office at the local level.

Did you know the County Clerk maintains two offices?

The main office is located at the County Courthouse in downtown Mason and our branch office is located in Lansing at the Veterans Memorial Courthouse 313 W. Kalamazoo, on the corner of Kalamazoo and Walnut. Our hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. At our Mason location, there is free on street parking around the building. In Lansing there is free parking across from the Courthouse and metered parking on the street. At either location our staff will be happy to assist you with vital records, filing assumed names, co-partnerships, and issuing and filing marriage licenses.  In addition, we process concealed weapons applications and notary bonds. Concealed Weapons applications are taking about up to 10 weeks for approval. Our office is dedicated to offering prompt and efficient service to get you in and out of the door quickly and courteously.  Still have questions? Feel free to give us a call at (517) 676-7201.

My staff and I are dedicated to providing quality services to the citizens of Ingham County.  If I may be of assistance to you, please feel free to contact me.

Passports

THE INGHAM COUNTY CLERK'S OFFICE IS NO LONGER ABLE TO PROCESS PASSPORTS
In 2003, the US Department of State stopped designating new passport acceptance facilities that also issued primary birth documentation, unless the two functions were physically separated and acceptance agents could not create, amend or issue birth documents.  At that time, facilities such as the Ingham County Clerk's Office, which were already designated and issuing birth documentation, were "grandfathered" into the Passport Acceptance Program pending future action.  Recently the US Department of State has changed policy and the Ingham County Clerk's Office will no longer be able to process passport applications but will continue their statutory duty providing birth documents.

The Ingham County Parks Department and the City of Lansing Clerk's Office both have been designated as passport centers.
